Dominating the Piazza del Municipio from the top of its majestic staircase, the Cathedral of San Nicolò is not only the most emblematic building of Noto, but is also the beating heart of Sicilian Baroque. Its position, overlooking Corso Vittorio Emanuele and in front of Palazzo Ducezio, embodies the harmony between the religious and civil power of the city.
Dedicated to San Nicolò of Myra, the Cathedral was built in the area of Majoris Ecclesiae, the nerve center of Noto after the 1693 earthquake, following the urban planning design of Angelo Italia and the Duke of Camastra. Declared a national monument in 1940 and elevated to a minor basilica in 2012, its history reflects the city's path to rebirth.
Construction began in the 1840s under the guidance of local workers and dragged on for decades due to financial interruptions. It was Marquis Giovanni Di Lorenzo who financed the construction of the spectacular staircase in 1771 which still anticipates the imposing façade today.
The façade of the Cathedral is a refined expression of the Baroque, with influences ranging from the French model of the churches of Saint Louis in Versailles and Saint Roch in Paris, to the Roman Baroque highlighted in the central window. The interior, despite being more sober, houses precious works of art among which the silver Ark of San Corrado Confalonieri, the spiritual heart of the community, stands out.
The Cathedral suffered numerous structural damages caused by seismic events, which required restoration and consolidation interventions, culminating in 2007 with its reopening for worship. The recent frescoes of the dome and the sculptures of the Evangelists add a contemporary touch that respects the original artistic language.
