Piazza Duomo is dominated by the Cathedral of Syracuse, a medieval church inserted in a Greek Doric temple, while on the opposite side stands the Temple of Apollo (6th century BC), one of the oldest in Sicily<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamberorosso.it\/notizie\/rubriche\/miniguide\/dove-mangiare-bere-siracusa\/#:~:text=Si%20trova%20sulla%20costa%20sud,turisti%20%C3%A8%20ancora%20sopportabile%20ma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. In the square there are also baroque buildings and the \u201c<strong>Hypogeum of Piazza Duomo<\/strong>\u201d underground with cisterns (recently opened to the public).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arethusa Fountain<\/strong>: characteristic source of fresh water a few steps from the sea, surrounded by papyrus, legendary place of nymphs in mythology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maniace Castle<\/strong>: medieval fortress on the promontory of Ortigia, built in the 13th century at the behest of Frederick II<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hermes-sicily.com\/blog\/26-orari-apertura\/284-castello-maniace-orari-apertura#:~:text=Il%20Castello%20Maniace%20%C3%A8%20un%27imponente,28%20visite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beaches and nature reserves<\/strong>: a few kilometers from Syracuse there are very beautiful beaches, such as Fontane Bianche (golden sand) and the marine protected area of\u00a0<strong>Plemmirio<\/strong>, ideal for snorkeling in clear waters. Further south is the<strong>Vendicari Wildlife Oasis<\/strong>\u00a0(between Noto and Marzamemi), a large reserve of ponds and wild beaches (trekking trails lead to Calamosche and the Vendicari tuna fishery).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Local cuisine<\/strong>: Syracuse is famous for its fresh fish and seafood. You can taste them\u00a0<em>spaghetti with sea urchins<\/em>,\u00a0<em>swordfish alla ghiotta<\/em>,\u00a0<em>marinated seafood<\/em>\u00a0and sweet like the\u00a0<em>cudduruni<\/em>\u00a0and granitas. In Ortigia you can find typical\u00a0<em>artisanal ice cream shops<\/em>\u00a0and pastry shops with cassata and cannoli. Local markets also offer cheeses and oil produced in Sicily.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marzamemi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marzamemi is a small fishing village near Pachino, known for its picturesque little square and the&nbsp;<strong>Tuna fishery<\/strong>(former tuna fishing plant) which bears witness to an ancient local tradition<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamberorosso.it\/ristoranti\/dove-mangiare-marzamemi-ristoranti\/#:~:text=Una%20frazione%20del%20comune%20di,che%20di%20tonno%20in%20ogni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Queen Margaret Square<\/strong>: heart of the town with warm-coloured houses and small restaurants overlooking the port. Here you will find the\u00a0<strong>Villadorata Palace<\/strong>\u00a0(18th century, former noble residence) and the church of San Francesco da Paola, next to the historic tuna fishery<a href=\"https:\/\/www.riserva-vendicari.it\/vendicari-e-dintorni\/marzamemi\/palazzo-villadorata\/#:~:text=Il%20palazzo%20di%20Villadorata%20nel,le%20antiche%20dimore%20dei%20pescatori\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riserva-vendicari.it\/vendicari-e-dintorni\/marzamemi\/chiese-san-francesco-paola\/#:~:text=La%20chiesa%20antica%20di%20San,tipico%20stile%20barocco%2C%20sovrastato%20da\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marzamemi Tuna Fish Farm<\/strong>: ancient nineteenth-century tuna fishery, now restored for events and guided tours. It is possible to climb the bastions of the tuna fishery and admire the panorama of the sea, a symbol of the local tuna culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Island of Currents<\/strong>: a few km away, the southernmost point of Sicily where the Ionian Sea meets the Mediterranean. On the islet grow plants typical of the Mediterranean scrub and it is a destination for wild nature (with cliffs and a lighthouse).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beaches<\/strong>: golden sandy beaches are nearby, including the\u00a0<strong>Calamosche<\/strong>\u00a0(in the Vendicari Reserve) and San Lorenzo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seafood cuisine<\/strong>: Marzamemi is in the land of Nero d&#039;Avola (local red wine) and\u00a0<strong>Pachino Tomato<\/strong>(PGI)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamberorosso.it\/ristoranti\/dove-mangiare-marzamemi-ristoranti\/#:~:text=Una%20frazione%20del%20comune%20di,che%20di%20tonno%20in%20ogni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. Tuna and blue fish dishes dominate here \u2013 for example\u00a0<em>busiate with bottarga<\/em>, aubergine caponata and\u00a0<em>chicken alla ghiotta<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 often prepared with artisanal fish preserves. Among the recommended places, the\u00a0<em>Campisi Restaurant<\/em>\u00a0(from the well-known canning company), where you can try busiate with tuna bottarga and house specialties<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamberorosso.it\/ristoranti\/dove-mangiare-marzamemi-ristoranti\/#:~:text=Campisi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. Marzamemi is also famous for its artisanal ice creams in the square (don&#039;t miss the pistachio flavor).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pachino and surroundings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The famous Pachino countryside is where the&nbsp;<strong>Pachino IGP Tomato<\/strong>&nbsp;and the intense wines of the area (such as Nero d&#039;Avola). There is no shortage of natural attractions: the<strong>Vendicari Oasis<\/strong>&nbsp;(southern side of Noto) is a 1,500 hectare reserve with ponds, salt pans, beaches and archaeological finds<a href=\"https:\/\/www.italia.it\/it\/sicilia\/siracusa\/riserva-di-vendicari#:~:text=Quella%20di%20Vendicari%20%C3%A8%20una,Ragusa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. Here you can observe flamingos and migratory birds, snorkel in the coves of Calamosche and Vendicari, and visit the ancient tuna fisheries. In the surroundings of the center of Pachino there are also protected areas such as the small Lake of Pantano and large beaches such as Punta delle Formiche. In the city it is worth discovering the historic center with Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and tasting local products: in addition to tomatoes, the production of olives, prickly pears and preserves is widespread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pozzallo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pozzallo is known for its long sandy beaches on the Ionian Sea and its ferry connection to Malta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Santa Maria del Focallo Beach<\/strong>\u00a0(south of Pozzallo): huge golden coastline of about 8 km, with clear sea and almost uncontaminated environment. Perfect for sunset walks and for families thanks to the shallow seabed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cabrera Tower<\/strong>\u00a0(14th century, in the city center): imposing medieval fortress built to defend the coast from pirates. It was erected by the Count of Modica Giovanni Cabrera and dominates the port. Today the tower is a national monument and houses a museum, with a view of the sea and the prisons where prisoners were locked up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remembrance Square<\/strong>: elegant central square on the sea, surrounded by palm trees and Art Nouveau buildings (including Palazzo Musso, Giunta and Pandolfi)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.riserva-vendicari.it\/blog\/cosa-vedere-a-pozzallo-le-3-cose-da-non-perdere\/#:~:text=Piazza%20delle%20Rimembranze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. A meeting point for the city with bars and restaurants overlooking the port.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Local cuisine<\/strong>: Pozzallo offers excellent fresh fish (sardines, mackerel, swordfish) and seafood. Among the specialities are the\u00a0<em>pasta with sardines<\/em>, the\u00a0<strong>aroma cake<\/strong>\u00a0(local sweet) and Ragusa cheeses. The characteristic\u00a0<strong>Ragusano DOP<\/strong>, traditional aged sheep&#039;s cheese. Modica is famous for its historic center &quot;with 100 churches&quot; and is part of the UNESCO site of Val di Noto<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travel365.it\/modica-cosa-vedere.htm#:~:text=Modica%20%C3%A8%20una%20cittadina%20dalla,un%20paio%20di%20giorni%2C%20che\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Historic center<\/strong>: perched on hills, characterized by alleys and stairways. Rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in late Baroque style, the entire center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travel365.it\/modica-cosa-vedere.htm#:~:text=Modica%20%C3%A8%20una%20cittadina%20dalla,un%20paio%20di%20giorni%2C%20che\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cathedral of San Giorgio<\/strong>\u00a0(12th\u201319th century): a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque with a 62 m high tower fa\u00e7ade, decorated with statues. Above the door you can admire a long\u00a0<em>monumental staircase of 164 steps<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travel365.it\/modica-cosa-vedere.htm#:~:text=Image%3A%20modica%20duomo%20di%20san,Piombo%2C%20costeggiato%20dalla%20scalinata%20monumentale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. Inside five naves decorated with stucco and marble. The church is a symbol of Modica and stands out on the city skyline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>St. Peter&#039;s Cathedral<\/strong>: ancient church (1360) in the upper city (Modica Superiore) with a baroque fa\u00e7ade and a staircase decorated with statues of the Apostles. This building (church of the Counts of Modica) is also included among the UNESCO heritage sites<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travel365.it\/modica-cosa-vedere.htm#:~:text=3%20,Pietro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chocolate Museum<\/strong>: in Modica you can visit a museum dedicated to the confectionery tradition of chocolate, still made according to the ancient Spanish recipe (cold, with cocoa flakes). A delicious stop together with the local pastry shops (don&#039;t miss the\u00a0<em>almond paste<\/em>\u00a0hey\u00a0<em>Modica nougat<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Typical cuisine<\/strong>: Modica is famous for its\u00a0<strong>artisanal chocolate<\/strong>\u00a0(with a grainy taste) and for dishes such as\u00a0<em>hunts<\/em>\u00a0(stuffed calzone),\u00a0<em>grilled meat<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Ragusa cheese<\/em>,\u00a0<em>spicy caponata<\/em>\u00a0and almond sweets. For a gourmet meal you can try the restaurant\u00a0<em>Accursio<\/em>\u00a0(starred) or other renowned places in the historic center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ragusa and surroundings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Panoramic view on&nbsp;<strong>Ragusa Ibla<\/strong>&nbsp;(bottom) dominated by the Cathedral of San Giorgio: the baroque historic center of Ragusa Ibla is connected to the upper city (Ragusa Superiore) by the Iblei Gardens. Ragusa \u2013 like the other cities of the Val di Noto \u2013 was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake to a high artistic level.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ragusa is divided into&nbsp;<strong>Ibla<\/strong>&nbsp;(baroque historic center) and&nbsp;<strong>Superior<\/strong>&nbsp;(new city). Ragusa is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Baroque \u201cVal di Noto\u201d)<a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1024\/#:~:text=The%20eight%20towns%20in%20south,town%20planning%20and%20urban%20building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ragusa Ibla<\/strong>: admire the Cathedral of St. George and other baroque churches overlooking the deep valley.\u00a0<strong>Iblei Gardens<\/strong>\u00a0(public park) offer a splendid panoramic view of the Baroque churches and palaces of Ibla, with fountains and monuments. Among the smaller churches, Santa Maria dell&#039;Idria stands out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Upper Ragusa<\/strong>: in the center stands out the\u00a0<strong>Cathedral of St. John the Baptist<\/strong>\u00a0(17th century), large baroque church with a large churchyard and richly decorated interiors. The streets of the center are full of lively squares, boutiques and restaurants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Local cuisine and products<\/strong>: in the Ragusa area the prized\u00a0<em>Ragusano DOP<\/em>\u00a0(aged sheep&#039;s cheese) and local wines.
